The Government of India has set up the Pay Commission to determine the salaries of government employees. Following India’s Independence, seven pay commissions have been formed to review and recommend the remuneration of all of the government’s civil and military divisions. On 25 September 2013, then Finance Minister P Chidambaram announced
that the constitution of the 7th Pay Commission. It was approved by Dr. Manmohan Singh (Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014). The Commission was set up under the chairmanship of Justice Ashok Kumar Mathur. Its recommendations were expected to come into effect from 1 January, 2016, however, due to certain complications, the implementation saw a delay.
In June 2016, the Cabinet cleared all recommendations made by 7th Pay Commission report, which suggested about 23.55% overall hike in salaries, allowances and pension for over 1 crore government employees.
